Warning From Above

Jared flung the wrench as hard as he could and kicked the tire. Damn you, stupid truck, he thought, frustrated as the wrench fell onto the dirt with a loud thud.

“Everything okay, Jared?” His mother poked her head out the screen door.

Breathing hard, Jared said, “Why can’t we sell this stupid thing again?” His mother gave him a stern look. Jared sighed. “I know I know, it doesn’t worth a cent. Go back and bake your pies.”

“You sound more like your father everyday.” His mother retreated.

Wiping the sweat from his brow with his sleeves, Jared went and picked up the fallen wrench and suddenly, he noticed a glint in the dirt several inches away. He brushed the dirt away and discovered a silver plate. On it were the words: “Son, you better take care of Daisy May or you’ll disappoint your mother. The truck’s named after her, you know.”

Jared staggered back, “Whoa.” He muttered and glanced back at the truck and at the plate again but the plate had vanished.
